About the Summer Music Institute
2019 marks the 26th year of the Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra National Trustees Summer Music Institute, a four-week festival of orchestral and chamber music for young people ages 15 to 20 at the Kennedy Center. This year, musicians from 23 states, Costa Rica, and Ukraine participate in the Institute. The program consists of orchestral and chamber music coached by NSO musicians, conducting and masterclasses, private lessons with NSO musicians, two side-by-side rehearsals with the NSO; and enrichment sessions concentrating on music literature, health and wellness, entrepreneurship, and Citizen Artistry. Several of the local students are graduates or current participants of the NSO Youth Fellowship Program, an orchestral training program for talented young musicians. Also included are students participating in a Young Artists’ of Color national training initiative of the Kennedy Center.
